8 Bollywood Celebrities Who Opened Up About Their Mental Health Issues

New Delhi: Both mental and physical health are critical components of overall health. Our emotional, psychological and social well-being contribute to our mental health. It influences the way we think, feel and act. It also affects how we deal with stress, interact with people, and make good decisions. Mental health is essential throughout our lives, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood.

As progressive as we claim to be, mental health is still a big taboo in our culture, and we rarely discuss it freely. However, Bollywood celebrities have started talking about it in public forums in an attempt to convince people that being mentally ill for a short period of time is completely normal and that it is okay to discuss it openly. They also discuss how they overcame adversity with the help of their family and friends and encourage us that even though things may not look good all the time, we must fight and overcome adversity to live a happy life.

Here are some Bollywood celebrities who have spoken about their mental health battles and shared their stories of recovery.

1. Shraddha Kapoor:

Shraddha Kapoor initially admitted to experiencing anxiety in 2018 while celebrating the success of her film Stree. Speaking to the media, she said that she had been dealing with anxiety for the previous three to four years and that she was dealing with it positively every day. The 32-year-old performer had also once stated that after the release of Aashiqui 2 in 2013, she experienced discomfort that had no physiological explanation.

She emphatically states that anxiety is not a battle. Instead of fighting it, one should embrace it and accept it as a part of oneself and approach it with love. This has a significant impact. Whether a person experiences anxiety or not, they should always know who they are and what they are. She has struggled with anxiety for a long time and has progressed from not understanding what it is to accepting and dealing with it.

2. Ileana D’Cruz:

In an interview, the actress discussed her battle with body dysmorphic disorder, anxiety and depression, and how the constant care and love from family and friends helped her through these difficult times. She would sit in the corner and cry for hours, she had once claimed. In previous interviews with the media, she has spoken openly about her past and that she firmly believes that people should check for themselves if they are not feeling well and not be afraid to do so.

Ileana has discussed mental health issues on several occasions. In one of her previous interviews with a news outlet, she discussed the stigmas associated with mental health. According to reports, the actress went to see a therapist because she needed it. She says it’s not forbidden to seek help. It’s okay to cry, sob, or just lose it every now and then. Everything is fine. It’s natural, it’s human. Ileana also said that we need to include conversations about different topics, not just mental health. She believes that if we open up and just listen to others, we will be much more sensitive and healthy.

3. Hrithik Roshan:

Actor Hrithik Roshan encouraged people to realize that mental illness should not be stigmatized; they are serious problems that require help. He stated that he went through ups and downs as well as sadness and bewilderment. He claims that this is a common occurrence and that we should all talk about it because we all have ups and downs in our lives. They are significant because they both contribute to our evolution. When we are going through a difficult time, it is extremely important to keep our heads clear. Sometimes the brain takes over and feeds a person unwanted thoughts unrelated to their life goals, and that’s when we need an objective perspective.

4. Sanjay Dutt:

Sanjay Dutt has faced more hardships than most Bollywood stars. He said his stint in jail caused him to fall into depression after losing his mother and wife to cancer, followed by suspicions of his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts. The actor was reportedly unable to sleep .

Recently, in 2020, the 63-year-old actor was also diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, which really broke him. It is said that he cried for hours thinking of his wife and children. It was as if he had seen his life flash before his eyes and then he finally decided not to be weak. He told the doctor he won’t be weak, he won’t lose his hair or throw up, and he rides his bike for an hour after each chemo.

But, as they say, God gives the hardest battles to his strongest troops, and he had declared on his children’s birthday that he was happy to have won the battle and could give them the best gift he could – health and well-being of the family – being.

5. Deepika Padukone:

In a TV interview, the stunning beauty not only revealed that she suffers from depression, but also went on to set up a mental health foundation, the Live Love Laugh Foundation, to help others going through the same experience. She is one of those actresses who has been quite vocal about mental health and has always encouraged people to talk about it. When she was suffering, she had initially assumed it was stress, so she tried to distract herself by focusing on work and surrounding herself with others, which worked for a while, but the unpleasant feeling persisted. Her breathing was shallow, she struggled with focus and often fell apart.

She claims that she doesn’t want to live anymore and that she doesn’t want anyone else to go through what she went through. She previously stated that her condition has taught her many things, including patience and most importantly, Hope.

6. Honey Singh:

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh has said he suffered from bipolar disorder and struggled with alcoholism. It was a particularly terrible phase. Many people envied him, wondering how such a small boy could achieve so much. He also told a news outlet that he has additional problems. He admitted that he was an alcoholic and could not sleep. He was also overtired. And the situation is gradually getting worse. It took him four months to realize that something was wrong with him.

He talked about it after he recovered and took a break from work for about eighteen months and explained what it felt like, thus leading to better understanding and less stigma.

Shama Sikandar, who also had a bipolar attack, says she came back from the dead and felt like a reborn after overcoming mental health.

7. Karan Johar:

In an interview, popular director Karan Johar spoke candidly about his battle with depression. He has publicly stated that there are many unresolved issues that he needs to resolve so that others in similar circumstances can move on with their lives. He added that there was a time in his life when he was really depressed and felt like he was going to die. He stated that he was experiencing anxiety and as a consequence he had seen a psychologist, which made him realize that he had some internal difficulties to deal with that had built up to the point of causing anxiety.

He stated that his doctor informed him that even if he believes that he has thick skin and that it doesn’t matter, he suppresses those things inside that sometimes come out. Karan Johar claims that he then started talking to others about it and felt better. Karan explained that he feels better since he started interacting with his close friends and family.

8. Rubina Dilike:

The Bigg Boss 14 winner, in one of the show’s segments, discussed dealing with anxiety and stress, suicidal thoughts and anger issues. Actress Shakti spoke about all this on national television, blaming these factors for the failed relationship. She discussed her relationship with her parents and stated that they were not ideal. She admitted to having anger issues and suicidal tendencies, which she blamed for the relationship’s breakdown, while revealing some heartbreaking incidents from her personal life.

When asked about the stigma surrounding mental health, Rubina said she couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her because no one was talking about it. She explained that sadness made her feel not only lonely and irritated, but also self-doubt. Rubina went on to say that she needed to do some research online to find out what was going on with her. Things improved for her after she discovered yoga and meditation.
